 PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Garden Coordinator position is a part-time, seasonal position (March – September) that has two primary functions. 50% of this position’s time will be working with young people, ages 5 – 18 on gardening and nutrition education. Activities for youth will be planned and carried out each week throughout the growing season. The remaining 50% of the Garden Coordinator’s time will be spent maintaining garden facilities, caring for seeds and plants.

 

KEY ROLES:

 

  • Lead garden and nutrition education classes for young people of a variety of ages.

  • Work with Program Director and Education Director to plan weekly themes and lesson plans.

  • Work with Food Program Manager on nutrition education and produce use in Club kitchens.

  • Record any necessary survey or other outcome information on garden program.

  • Maintain garden space with weeding, watering, tilling, harvesting etc.

  • Occasionally work with and assist in managing garden volunteers.

  • Clean, maintain and manage all garden tools and equipment.

  • Complete other duties as assigned to assist and support the garden initiative.

     

    SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

Experience in gardening and horticulture and baseline knowledge of nutrition information is preferred. 2+ years of vegetable gardening experience required. Basic knowledge of plant health and garden pest management required. The candidate must be a collaborative person who enjoys working as part of a larger “Club Team” to develop lesson plans. We are looking for a self-starter who can take initiative and bring their own ideas to the table. Experience working with youth, especially children of color and marginalized backgrounds. Proficient in Spanish is a plus. This position is physically demanding and requires extended periods of being physically active, occasionally lifting up to 50lbs.
