REPORTS TO:                          VEC Branch Director 

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT:        Full-Time Seasonal

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To provide a safe, fun, educational experience for club youth and other guest groups that utilize the VEC waterfront. The Waterfront Director is responsible for the safety and welfare of all persons present at the waterfront and the VEC boating programs. They are responsible to provide assists and rescues to all distressed swimmers and boaters, to provide immediate first aid and emergency CPR care. They will supervise the Camp Lifeguards and Counselors to ensure the safe operation of the waterfront area.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordinate with Branch Director and Summer Camp Program Director for scheduling waterfront use and activities.
  • Possess a passion for working with children and youth, be able to lead responsibly and be a positive role model in character and actions.
  • Schedule Lifeguards and assign LG certified Camp Staff to waterfront activities to ensure proper supervision of all aquatic activities.
  • Supervision of campers, staff, rental groups, and visitors who utilize the VEC waterfront and boating programs.
  • Promote and enforce all water safety rules and regulations for swimming and boating activities.
  • Be in place at waterfront with all rescue equipment being ready at least 10 minutes before all scheduled waterfront programming activities.
  • Lead all programmed waterfront activities including canoeing and swim classes.
  • Assist with “Waterfront Orientation” with each group that utilizes the waterfront.
  • Responsible for the daily maintenance which may include checking swim area for hazards, beach clean-up, docks, boats, rescue equipment, and boathouse area.
  • Participate in staff training, and all required meetings. Must be familiar with all camp policies and procedures.
  • Assist in other camp operation areas (program, food service, maintenance, office) as needed and maintain a positive team attitude.
  • Assist with clean-up daily and at the end of the camp session.
  • Assist with programming needs for outside rental groups and day camps that utilize VEC facility.
  • Assist with programming needs off-site at other BGC-TC clubs and events as assigned by Program Director or Branch Director.
  • Other tasks assigned by Program Director and Branch Director to fulfill the mission of VEC.

EXPERIENCE, REQUIREMENTS AND LICENSURE(S):    

  • Minimum age for this position is 20.
  • Must be an active team member.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Good interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • At least 1 year of experience working with youth in a childcare setting, learning environment, camp setting or similar.
  • Certifications in Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid. Prefer Waterfront LG certification. Certifications may be obtained during a pre-camp training.

PREFERRED:

  • Two or more years of experience working with youth in a camp, club, or other aquatic setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is located at Voyageur Environmental Center, a 100+ acre outdoor facility with over a mile of trails over hills and through forests and an active waterfront on Little Long Lake. This position has a significant amount of outdoor work and individuals must be able to be outside in all kinds of weather. 

 

Individuals must be able to climb stairs, lift at least 50 lbs., be able to stand for long periods of time, walk moderate distances, move objects, reach for objects, and bend/twist at the waist.

This is a moderately stressful position that requires the candidate to be in good physical and emotional health.

 

As a Lifeguard this position requires specific swimming ability (swim 500 yards non-stop, efficient use of swim strokes, ability to tread water for 3 minutes).
