JOB TITLE:    Kitchen Assistant

DEPARTMENT:    Voyageur Environmental Center

REPORTS TO:     Branch Director and Head Cook

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT:   Full-Time Seasonal

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Kitchen Assistant is responsible for providing healthy food, and a clean dining environment for guests utilizing our food services.                   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare meals when the Head Cook is unavailable
  • Complete food prep for each meal
  • Manage the serving line during mealtime
  • Clean dishes after each meal
  • Make sure that next meal items have been pulled for preparation
  • Set up and take down tables and chairs in the dining room between camp groups as needed
  • Mopping and general cleaning of the kitchen and dining room as needed.
  • Enforce all health standards and regulations established by the Department of Health, plus those deemed necessary by the Branch Director
  • Provide supervision to kitchen and dining room staff
  • A team player who will support other staff and subscribe to the mission of Boys & Girls Clubs-Twin Cities
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

EXPERIENCE, REQUIREMENTS AND LICENSURE(S):

  • A minimum of 1-2 years documented experience and training in food service management.  High school diploma or GED required
  • Ability to acquire a ServSafe Food Manager certification or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
  • Ability to operate gas, electrical, and mechanical equipment in the food service area
  • Visual ability to determine the cleanliness of the entire kitchen and dining room area, and ability to supervise corrective action as needed

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is located at Voyageur Environmental Center, a 100+ acre outdoor facility with over a mile of trails over hills and through forests and an active waterfront on Little Long Lake. This position has a significant amount of outdoor work and individuals must be able to be outside in all kinds of weather. 

Individuals must be able to climb stairs, lift at least 50 lbs., be able to stand for long periods of time, walk moderate distances, move objects, reach for objects, and bend/twist at the waist. Physical strength to lift heavy pots and pans, and to move food and supplies.

This is a moderately stressful position that requires the candidate to be in good physical and emotional health.
