DEPARTMENT:           Voyageur Environmental Center (VEC)

REPORTS TO:            VEC Branch Director

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT:      Seasonal Full-Time (32-40 hrs a week May - June 10; 40 hrs. a week June 11 - September 5)

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Boys and Girls of the Twin Cities (BGCTC) mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens." The BGCTC is committed to ongoing strategic initiatives to reduce systemic racism throughout the Twin Cities and have defined ways that the Club serves as an activator in addressing the extreme disparities for young people in the communities we serve. The Club is implementing a program model that directly impacts the educational achievement gap in partnership with teachers/schools and parents/guardians.

The Outdoor Education Instructor will facilitate VEC’s environmental education and outdoor recreation programs and activities. They will plan and prepare programs that best suit the needs of our Club youth and user groups. The incumbent will serve as a host and program liaison to groups that utilize center. The Outdoor Education Instructor may also be called upon to deliver programming to the Clubs located around Twin Cities. The OE Instructor will provide an atmosphere where we “Keep It Safe, Make It Fun, Active Every Day.”

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares, teaches, and facilitates environmental education and outdoor recreation programs based on VEC’s established curriculum and safety standards.
  • Assist in leading/instructing outdoor recreation activities (canoeing, paddle sports, archery, fishing) to school and rental groups.
  • Lead/teach the VEC’s outdoor/nature education curriculum to groups of 10-20 students from visiting school groups.
  • Assist in leading/supervising large group camp activities (campfires, outdoor tag-games, indoor activities, night hikes).
  • Identifies and responds to participant behavior in an appropriate, edifying manner.
  • Assists with pre-group set-up and post-group tear-down.
  • Maintains, inventories, and repairs class materials and equipment.
  • Provides hospitality and serves as host to groups that utilize the facility. This may include serving meals in our dining hall and doing housekeeping duties.
  • Participates in staff trainings and meetings.
  • Travel off-site to deliver Voyageur programming to the BGC-TC Clubs.
  • At least 1 year of experience working with youth in a childcare, learning environment, camp setting or similar.
  • At least of 1 year of experience and background working in outdoor education, outdoor recreation, environmental studies, youth work, or education.

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum age for this position is 20.
  • Must be able to actively engage children and youth, while maintaining a positive educational environment in a variety of circumstances.
  • Must participate as an active team member.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Good interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is located at Voyageur Environmental Center, a 100+ acre outdoor facility with over a mile of trails over hills and through forests and an active waterfront on Little Long Lake. This position has a significant amount of outdoor work and individuals must be able to be outside in all kinds of weather.

Individuals must be able to climb stairs, lift at least 50 lbs., be able to stand for long periods of time, walk moderate distances, move objects, reach for objects, and bend/twist at the waist.

This is a moderately stressful position that requires the candidate to be in good physical and emotional health.

Classes normally last two (2) hours, and may include hiking all types of terrain, running, canoeing/paddling, and other outdoor active endeavors.
