DEPARTMENT:                                   Voyageur Environmental Center (VEC)

REPORTS TO:                                      Program Director at VEC

TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT:                    Full-Time Seasonal

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

To provide a safe, fun, educational experience for club youth and other guest groups that utilize the VEC for summer camps. Plan, direct, and implement programs in outdoor living skills. Building fires, shelters, outdoor survival, and overnight camping skills, etc. Leads groups of 12-40 youth at a time.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Create a safe, fun, educational, engaging environment utilizing programming in outdoor living skills where personal goals are aimed for and met. 
  • Lead activity sessions during week that focuses on and develops campers’ love for outdoor living.
  • Plan and lead day and overnight bike/hike/canoe camping trips, ensuring that each trip is properly supervised and equipped.
  • Prepare menus in coordination with camp food service, and pack/prepare food for day and overnight trips.
  • Inventories and properly stores all camping and outdoor recreation equipment.
  • May include teaching fishing, archery, paddle sports, bike trekking, or other outdoor recreation activities.
  • Position tends to be the primary fire builder for opening and closing campfires.
  • Maintain a safety conscious attitude in performing duties and provide physically and emotionally safe environment for all campers.
  • Participate in staff training and all required meetings. Must be familiar with all camp policies and procedures.
  • Assist in other camp operation areas (program, food service, maintenance, and office) as needed and maintain a positive team attitude.
  • Assist with daily clean-up, and at the end of the camp sessions.
  • Assist with programming needs for outside rental groups and day camps that utilize VEC facility.
  • Assist with programming needs off-site at other BGC-TC clubs and events as assigned by Program Director or Branch Director.
  • Other tasks assigned by Program Director and/or Branch Director to fulfill the mission of VEC.
  • As an overnight camp, the ODLS may be required to sleep in cabins with campers to provide overnight supervision.

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:   

  • Minimum age for this position is 18.
  • Must be an active team member.
  • Good interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Live on-site during the weeks when camp is in session (8-12 weeks) primarily in the cabins with campers, occasionally in staff housing.
  • At least 1 year of experience working with youth in a childcare setting, learning environment, camp setting or similar.

PREFERRED:

Two or more years of experience working with youth in a camp setting, club, or other recreational environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is located at Voyageur Environmental Center, a 100+ acre outdoor facility with over a mile of trails over hills and through forests and an active waterfront on Little Long Lake. This position has a significant amount of outdoor work and individuals must be able to be outside in all kinds of weather. 

Individuals must be able to climb stairs, lift at least 50 lbs., be able to stand for long periods of time, walk moderate distances, move objects, reach for objects, and bend/twist at the waist.

This is a moderately stressful position that requires the candidate to be in good physical and emotional health.
